Virgin Blue signs deal with Boeing for 105 aircrafts
Virgin Blue Holdings Ltd. announced today that it has signed a contract with aircraft maker Boeing Ltd for as much as 105 Boeing 737 aircrafts. This is the biggest ever single plane order by Virgin, the second biggest carrier in Australia.
Virgin said that the deal comes after nine months of talks. The financial terms of the deal were not revealed by the company.
According to the deal, Virgin ordered as much as 105 737 aircrafts to Boeing. The company said that it placed firm orders for 50 aircrafts and took options on 25 more aircrafts. Virgin also said that the company has purchased the future rights for another 30 aircrafts.
Boeing will deliver these aircrafts in six years from June 2011 to 2017. Though the financial terms of the deal were not revealed by the company, Virgin said that the deal was completed on attractive commercial terms.
Virgin also said that it expects to complete funding plans for the deal shortly.
Virgin said it expects this deal will help the airline to grow strongly in future as domestic and global markets started to recover.
"Virgin Blue was fortunate to see the opportunity and be in a position to take advantage of the downturn in the market," said Brett Godfrey, chief executive officer of Virgin.
