Van Johnson, box office idol of war movies, dies at 92
Los Angeles - Actor Van Johnson, who was one of Hollywood's top stars during World War II, has died aged 92 in a New York nursing home, the Los Angeles Times reported Friday.
Johnson played a succession of all-American military heroes in movies such as A Guy Named Joe and Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo when many more-established stars were serving in the armed forces. He was exempted from military duties because of a car accident in 1943 that left him with a metal plate in his head.
The Rhode Island-born actor also starred in movies such as Go For Broke, The Caine Mutiny, Two Girls and a Sailor, and Weekend at the Waldorf. (dpa)
