Washington - The US unemployment rate surged to 8.9 per cent in April as 539,000 more jobs were lost during the month, the US Labour Department said Friday.

The jobless rate was up from 8.5 per cent in March and 5.7 million jobs have now been shed since the US recession began in December 2007. (dpa)
