Washington, Dec 24 : Pakistan has been assured that so far the US Government has seen no evidence, which would suggest that India plans military strikes in retaliation to the Mumbai terrorist attacks.

The "eyes in the sky" that the United States maintains scouting the region have shown no movement of Indian troops closer to the border with Pakistan, nor any other evidence that war preparations are underway.

Given the spate of rumours and Pakistan Air Force planes taking to the skies over the country's major cities, there are fears that this may be a prelude to war, the Daily Times reported.

On Tuesday, Indian Army chief General Deepak Kapoor visited the Siachen glacier, where a ceasefire is in place since 2002, to review "military preparedness".

"General Kapoor was briefed in the base camp and also by Major General V. K. Ahluwalia (commander of the Leh- headquartered 14 Corps). He also flew to the Kumar Post at 16,000 feet," an army officer said.

General Kapoor's Siachen visit at this point of time sends confusing signals.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday said that "nobody wants war" and renewed the call for Pakistan to crack down on Islamic militant groups blamed for the attack on Mumbai last month. (ANI)
