US Concerned over Possible Damage to Under Sea Cables from Russian Submarines

The US intelligence agencies have expressed concern over possibilities of Russian spy ships and submarines attacking the undersea Internet cables.

Sources said that some of the Russian submarines have reached quite close to the cables. Concerns are being raised over the possibility of damage to those cables in times of distress between the countries.

US agencies said that no such official confirmation has yet been received, but the possibilities appear to be mounting. The movements have led to a sense of distrust between the two nations and the cold war times are being recalled.

“It would be a concern to hear any country was tampering with communication cables; however, due to the classified nature of submarine operations, we do not discuss specifics,” said Washington Navy spokesman Cmdr. William Marks.

Now the political intensions of Russia are also being placed under scanner.

Researcher Michael Sechrist estimated the possibility of secret damages to cables. The job was easy under the sea, he said.

The US intelligence agencies are presently keeping tab on the activities along the cables' known routes that stretch from the North Sea to Northeast Asia and waters located nearer to the United States.

A Russian Ship Yantar was spotted, last month, equipped with two self-propelled deep-sea submersible crafts, near US East Coast toward Cuba. It was here when the concerns of damage to cables were felt first.
