Two dead, including child, as train hits football fans in Paris
Paris- A group of celebrating football fans were hit by a train in Paris, leaving two dead including a 10-year-old child, a railway spokesman told French radio on Sunday.
The group had apparently been celebrating Lille's victory over league leaders Lyon at the Stade de France, according to a Lille club spokesman, and got lost crossing a railway bridge in an attempt to get back to their supporters' bus.
Eleven people were injured, three seriously.
Lille supporters' association said it was deeply shaken by the tragedy. The fans were apparently making their way along the tracks on a rail bridge over a canal, to find their way back to the bus.
Divers searched the canal for other victims but have not found any.
The train which struck the group was empty and making its way back to the rail depot, according to the railways spokesman. In the dark, the driver only had seconds to react after seeing the pedestrian group in his headlights.
Lille had beaten Lyon 2-0. (dpa)
