TRAI to Cancel 74 Licenses
It has been reported that Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is determined to cancel 74 licenses for delayed rollout. TRAI told DoT, “The authority has obtained legal opinion from two eminent jurists (former judges of the Supreme Court), who support this view”.
The Department of telecom (DoT) recommended TRAI to cancel only 12 licenses but TRAI has refused its follow its recommendation
Meanwhile, it has come to light that the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has identified six blocks of 20 MHz spectrum. It has been told that these spectrums could be auctioned to telecom companies for offering 4G services.
The spectrum identified by TRAI includes the 700 MHz band as well as the 2.5-2.6 GHz band. This means, the government will be able to offer 4G spectrum to eight companies, which will create tough competition.
It is believed that TRAI’s 4G road map will allow voice-over-internet calls between mobile and landline networks. At present, the internet users are provided with PC to PC communication without any connectivity to a PSTN network.
It is hoped that voice-over-internet calls will open a new market for companies like Reliance Industries, which have bought a pan-India BWA license but cannot offer voice calls until they tie up with a 2G operator.
