Toyota may be asked to pay second round of fines
As per the latest developments, it is expected that the US auto-safety regulator may impose a second round of fines on Toyota Corp.
The Japanese auto company has already been slapped with a fine of $16.375 million, on Monday. This was imposed because its vehicles showed problems in the accelerator.
The second round will be imposed because it hid information of sticking accelerators in 2.3 million vehicles.
In the official notification sent to Toyota by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, the auto major was accused of concealing the fact that it was testing the problems and had already made changes in the models available overseas.
The regulating agency also said that if the caps set by US laws on such penalties were not there, Toyota would have faced fines close to $13.8 billion.
Writing about the whole issue, Kevin Vincent, Chief Counsel of NHTSA said that the automaker had put the lives of millions of American under danger and it will have to pay fine for that.
He also said that the recalls made by Toyota were untimely and were done only after it received complaints from the customers.
