Toyota becomes largest selling automaker in 2012
Japanese Auto maker, Toyota Motor Corp has once again emerged as the largest auto seller in the world in 2011 with total sales of 9.75 million vehicles around the world.
Toyota reported records sales during the year and surpassed rivals like General Motors and Volkswagen to regain its position as the top selling automaker in the world. The company said that its total group-wide sales increased 22.6 per cent to 9.75 million, which is a new record in the company's 75 years of history.
The company has been able to increase sales after losing its top position in 2011due to a dent in its reputation in the aftermath of a major recall in the US and also due to a disruption in a supply chain due to an earthquake in Japan and floods in Thailand in that year.
The company was the highest selling automaker between 2008 and 2010, before it fell to the third position behind GM and Volkswagen. GM was able to 9.28 million vehicles in 2012, which is 2.9 per cent higher than the year earlier while Volkswagen sold 9.07 million vehicles, recording a growth of 11.2 per cent worldwide.
Toyota aims to sell 9.91 million vehicles group-wide globally in 2013.
