Tonite I Can Write
Theatre person Cyrus Dastur is content this time to just slip into the actor's shoes, with his new play, . Directed by Shomshukla, this play dwells on topics like love, understanding, friendship and homosexuality. Shomshukla says, "It is a story of a man and a woman who were lovers in their teens, but drifted apart only to find each other and their queer preferences later in their lives."
In the play, Cyrus plays the role of the male protagonist who is in love with a girl as long as he knew the word 'love'. However, with the passage of time, they realised that it was not the same kind of love that would make one want to hold the other one in his or her arms. The two part, promising to test the strength of their love, and rediscover their feelings for each other.
An interesting turn to the events happens when the guy finds out that he has fallen in love with someone from the same gender. Cyrus, points out, "As the storyline proceeds, my character realises that love is not restricted to any colour, or to any gender in particular. Even in today's times in the society, it is not easy to come out of the closet." He adds, "Given the theme of the play, it has been very tastefully done".
According to Cyrus, this play sticks to his traditions of not following the technicalities of regular theatre in the city. While Cyrus refuses to tag it as a 'minimalist' play, he says that the usual tools to establish a sensory appeal — dramatic lights, music and sound effects have been a total no-no. He explains, "In India, theatre has been traditional very flashy. We wanted to be very different from the rest, and hence our effort." The play is scheduled to take place on February 27th at NGMA.
