Times Square screen to show rover landing on MarsAmerican space agency, NASA has said that it will broadcast the landing of its rover on the surface of Mars on the screen at Times Square in Ney York.

The landing of NASA's USD 2.5 billion rover on Mars is scheduled for August 6. The rover, which is named Curiosity, will explore vast Gale Crater and will look for signs of water over a period of two years. The Curiosity rover will also look for signs of life on the red planet. The Curiosity rover was launched in November 2011. The rover will be lowered to the surface of the planet through a hovering rocket-powered "Sky Crane".

NASA's associate administrator for science missions John Grunsfeld said in a statement that, "In the city that never sleeps, the historic Times Square will be the place for New Yorkers to participate in this historic landing. When you think of all the big news events in history, you think of Times Square, and I can think of no better venue to celebrate this news-making event on Mars."

The broadcast will be from Mission Control at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory's in Pasadena, California. After a successful, the viewers will be able to see the scientists as they receive the final signal from the rover.
