Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 hits snags

Microsoft's Internet Explorer 8 hits snags San Francisco  - Despite some initial glowing reviews, Microsoft has been flooded with complaints about its new Internet Explorer 8 and has seen early users downgrade to the previous version, Information Week reported Monday.

The software giant is hoping that its new browser will help stem a steady flight of surfers to rival products, most notably the open- source Firefox browser.

According to the latest figures, Firefox now controls 22 per cent of the browser market compared to 67 per cent for Internet Explorer, which once enjoyed more than 90 per cent of the market.

Quantum tunneling may aid quest for low-cost DNA sequencing

DNAWashington, March 23 : A new research has indicated that a ghostly property of matter, called quantum tunneling, may aid the quest for accurate, low-cost DNA sequencing and sensor applications.

Stuart Lindsay and his collaborators at the Biodesign Institute of Arizona State University have done the research.

Tunneling implies that a particle, say an electron, can cross a barrier, when, according to classical physics, it does not have enough energy to do so.

Unraveling the DNA sequences of the human genome a decade ago was a remarkable achievement.

Reuse water can help golf courses stay green

golf coursesWashington, March 22 : A new research has determined that by taking advantage of reuse water, the golf industry can maintain their courses more effectively, and help them stay green.

So far, golf course superintendents have expressed concerns over the use of reuse water because of hidden costs associated with the practice.

These hidden costs include: foliar damage to ornamental plants, decline in water quality and aesthetic value of irrigation ponds and water features, related damage to equipment, long-term salt buildup in soil, and increased levels of turfgrass stress.

Soon, robotic octopus to solve the mysteries of seas

London, Mar 22 : Scientists are developing a robotic octopus that will be able to search the seabed with the same extraordinary dexterity as the real eight-legged cephalopod.

With no solid skeleton, the robot would be the world''s first entirely soft robot, say researchers.

The trouble with today''s remote-controlled subs, says researcher Cecilia Laschi of the Italian Institute of Technology in Genoa, is that their large hulls and clunky robot arms cannot reach into the nooks and crannies of coral reefs or the rock formations on ocean floors.
