Delhi to struggle in housing tourists of Commonwealth Games: Report

New Delhi, Sept 28 : Delhi would struggle to meet the requirement of 18,000 hotel rooms to host foreign tourists during the 2010 Commonwealth Games, according to a report published by a global hotel investment service firm. 

Jones Lang LaSalle Hotels (JLLH) said in its latest report, "The Commonwealth Games in 2010 is expected to attract 50,000 foreign visitors to Delhi ... approximately 30,000 rooms will be required to accommodate these visitors.”

At present, the National Capital Region (NCR) has about 10,500 rooms and an additional 15,000 to 18,000 rooms are required to take care of the foreign tourist inflow during the event. But, only 7,400 rooms are coming up in the NCR between 2008 and 2010, the report added. 

Delhi police hunt for motorcycle bombers, death toll rises to three

New Delhi - Police in New Delhi hunted Sunday for two suspects involved in the bombing at a city market as the death toll rose to three with two more people dying overnight, officials and news reports said.

Police said two men on a motorcycle and wearing helmets dropped a black plastic bag containing the explosive in the market in southern Mehrauli area on Saturday afternoon.

A 13-year-old boy who had picked up the bag to give it back to the bikers died on the scene as the bomb exploded moments after. At least 22 injured were moved to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences.

Death toll in Delhi''s Mehrauli blast rises to three

New Delhi, Sept 28 : The death toll in Saturday’s bomb blast in the Mehrauli flower market in south Delhi rose to three with one more person succumbing to his injuries this morning.

An unidentified man admitted to the All India Institute of Medical (AIIMS) died this morning, hospital sources said.

Police said at least 22 people were injured in the explosion, which came exactly two weeks after the national capital was rocked by serial blasts killing 24 people and maimed close to 100.

The Delhi Police sounded high alert and launched an extensive checking of vehicles in the capital a day after the blast.

Government panel to review defence personnel pay hike

Pranab MukherjeeNew Delhi, Sept 27 : A high-level committee headed by External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee was formed by the Centre on Saturday to address the Armed forces'' concerns over "anomalies" in the Central Sixth Pay Commission (CPC) report.

The Defence services have decided to accept the revised pay scales "for the moment" and submit the salary bills to the Defence Ministry on Monday, following the formation of the committee.

The three-member committee was constituted following a direction from Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, according to reports.

Vice President condemns Mehrauli blast

Hamid AnsariNew Delhi, Sept 27 : Vice President Mohammad Hamid Ansari has condemned the blast that occurred today at a flower market in Mehrauli area of New Delhi.

He expressed deep anguish that the blast has caused fatalities and casualties among innocent people, especially young children who were present at the blast site.

The Vice President said that such mindless and reprehensible acts of violence are intended to disturb peace and impede our national progress.

He also appealed the people to maintain calm and expressed his sympathy for the families of those killed and injured.

Myanmarese commemorate ''Saffron Revolution'' anniversary in New Delhi

New Delhi, Sept 27 : Scores of Myanmarese nationals gathered in New Delhi on Saturday to take out a march to commemorate the first anniversary of ‘Saffron Revolution’, when thousands of monks marched down the streets of Rangoon to call for democratic change.

Myanmar or Burma''s military regime had brutally cracked down on one of the most powerful and peaceful demonstration led by thousands of Buddhist monks and nuns in
2007.

The revolution came to be known as “Saffron Revolution” – named after the colour of the robes worn by the militant young monks spearheading the protests.
