Terror suspect Atif used fake certificate to get admission in Jamia

Uttar Pradesh, AzamgarhNew Delhi, Oct 15 : Atif, the alleged mastermind of the September 13 serial blasts in the national capital and was gunned down in a shootout last month, took admission in Jamia Millia University by allegedly using a fake degree certificate, said police.

According to the police, the 24-year-old Azamgarh youth allegedly submitted a B. Sc degree certificate from Allahabad University for taking admission in a post-graduation course in human rights at Jamia.

Allahabad University has confirmed that the graduation certificate used by Atif had not been issued by it.

Fertiliser companies should not worry on payment of subsidy: Paswan

Ram Vilas PaswanNew Delhi, Oct 15 : Union Minister for Steel, Chemicals and Fertilisers Ram Vilas Paswan today said that the fertilizer companies need not worry about the payment of subsidies.

Speaking here after receiving the dividend cheque from the public sector National Fertilizes Limited, Paswan said there is no arrear as regards the payment and additional requirements will me met out of the supplementary demand for grants.

He said international prices of fertilizer have fallen which will help to bring down the subsidy bill. But part of the gain will be off set by the fall in the exchange rate of rupee.

Unsafe GM food poised to explode in India: Greenpeace report

New Delhi, Oct. 15 : "We will survive without GM (Genetically Modified) food but we will never be able to survive the change unleashed by the tide of modification that is called Genetic Engineering" said Aruna Roy, at the launch of Greenpeace''s Genetic Gamble report on India''s GM Food proliferation on the eve of World Food Day.

Others who made strong public statements against GM food included Dr. Mira Shiva, Initiative for Health and Equity & Society and Mr. Bejon Misra, Consumer Voice.

"Studies from across the globe have shown that GM food has caused a series of health problems including adverse effects on growth, impaired immune system, and organ damage that can be carried over generations" stated Dr. Mira Shiva.

30pct Chinese netizens use cell phones for web surfing

New Delhi, October 15 : China has about 84.5 million people who use their cellular phones to surf the Internet, nearly 30 per cent of the total number of netizens in the country, according to an industry expert.

Yang Zemin, director of the Telecom Research Institute under the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, said that 68.7 million new cell phone users were registered in the first eight months, bringing the population of mobile users to about 616 million.

He reckoned that the population of Internet users had touched the 275 million mark by the end of September, 85 per cent of whom were broadband users.

He said that the number of fixed-line users was declining, reports the China Daily.

Reserve Bank and Government to infuse more liquidityNew Delhi, Oct 15 : The Reserve Bank and the government today agreed to take measures immediately to infuse liquidity into the system.

"RBI Governor D Subbarao will work out the details of the measures agreed upon between the government and the central bank," said Finance Minister P. Chidambaram.

I expect to be able to make a statement later in the afternoon, he added.

RBI Governor D Subbarao last evening called on Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. P. Chidambaram was present at the meeting.
