Chidambaram says 8 percent growth will be achieved in 2008

P ChidambaramSivaganga, Oct 25 : Finance Minister P Chidamabram today said that the government will take care to see that the global recession did not have any direct impact on the Indian economy that will continue to grow at eight percent this fiscal.

The eight percent growth rate achieved in the previous years would be sustained this year, he said at the inauguration of the renovated spinning mill of the National Textile Corp at Kalaiyarkoil in his constituency.

Though the Indian economy was linked with the world economy, the global recession would not have any direct impact on the country''s economy, he said.

New cancer treatment uses heavy ion beams to kill deep-seated tumours

Brain Cancer CellNew Delhi, Oct 25 : Chinese nuclear physicists have developed a new treatment for cancer that uses heavy ion beams to kill malignant tumours more than 2.1 cm below the skin''s surface.

Zhan Wenlong, the leading nuclear physicist in the country, has claimed that heavy ion beams score over light ion beams, such as gamma rays and X-rays used in traditional radiotherapies.

High ion beams can accurately moderate the amount of radiation and minimize the damage done to healthy cells, reports China Daily.

4,500 yr old archaeological discovery rewrites earliest Chinese characters dating

New Delhi, Oct 25 : Latest archaeological studies have shown that inscribed animal bones and jade pieces unearthed in Changle County of eastern Shandong Province in China, are the earliest examples of Chinese characters, dating back to 4,500 years.

The discovery broke the record for the previous earliest known examples of Chinese characters, the inscribed animal bones and tortoise shells, known as the oracle bones, of the Shang Dynasty (1600 BC-1100 BC), by more than 1,300 years.

The oracle bones were major discoveries at the Yinxu in Anyang of central China’s Henan Province.

The Shandong discovery was first made in 2004 by Xiao Guangde, the Changle Culture and History Committee director and an amateur collector.

India's Sensex crashes 11 per cent to three-year low

The 30-share Sensitive Index, which had lost 912 points in the last two sessions, crashed 10.92 per cent shortly after a credit and monetary review was announced by the Reserve Bank of India.

Defence Minister Antony agrees to allow private sector in defence production

A K AntonyNew Delhi, Oct 24 : Defence Minister A. K. Antony today said that the private sector participation in defence production has been allowed and foreign direct investment is allowed upto 26 per cent.

Addressing the National Seminar on defence offsets being organised by the Institute for Defence Studies and Analyses (IDSA) here, Antony said that private sector will henceforth require industrial licence only if it is stipulated under the requirement for defence industry.
