Iranian diplomat kidnapped in Pakistan's north-west

PakistanIslamabad - Gunmen on Thursday ambushed a car carrying an Iranian diplomat in north-western Pakistan and kidnapped the official after killing his guard, police and media reports said.

The diplomat was seized when he was travelling to the Iranian consulate in Peshawar, the capital of the troubled North West Frontier Province.

A police officer said the kidnappers intercepted the vehicle in the upscale Hayatabad neighbourhood and shot dead a police guard before whisking the official and his driver away.

Four soldiers, eight militants killed in Pakistan violence

Islamabad, PakistanIslamabad  - Four soldiers and eight insurgents were killed on Wednesday in continuing clashes between the military and Islamist militants in north-western Pakistan near the Afghan border, officials said.

Government troops killed at least eight rebels in intense gunfights in the restive valley of Swat where security forces are battling followers of radical cleric Maulana Fazlullah for over a year.

Clashes erupted when heavily-armed men targeted soldiers in Kabal area, a stronghold of Fazlullah.

US aid worker shot dead in north-west Pakistan

Pakistan North WestIslamabad - Unknown gunmen shot dead a US aid worker and his driver in Pakistan's north-west on Wednesday, officials and media reports said.

The attack occurred in an upmarket neighbourhood of Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province, located close to the restive tribal region.

"Assailants lying in ambush opened fire on the US national's car as it drove down an alley in the University Town (area of Peshawar), killing the foreigner and his local driver on the spot," an area police officer said on condition of anonymity.

PML-N leader says Opposition has numbers to topple PPP govt, “but won’t do it”

PPL & PMLLahore, Nov 12 : A prominent PML-N leader Javed Hashmi has reportedly claimed that the Opposition in Pakistan had enough lawmakers in the National Assembly to topple the PPP-led government.

But, he added, “the PML-N did not want to create political instability in the country”.

“At present 172 parliamentarians were sitting on the opposition benches in the NA and 170 members on the treasury benches,” the Daily Times quoted Hashmi as saying in an interview with a TV channel.

Pak tells UN it has suffered most from Afghan conflict

Pakistan and Afghanistan FlagUnited Nations, Nov 12 : Pakistan has reportedly told the United Nations that it had suffered “the most” from the direct consequences of decades of conflict and instability in Afghanistan.

He said a large number of Afghan refugees, including Al Qaeda and the Taliban, were staying in Pakistan after illegally crossing from across the Afghan border.

Pak will not allow US strikes on its soil, says PM Gilani
