Pervez Musharraf may resign in today’s ‘Address to the Nation’

Pakistan President Pervez MusharrafIslamabad, Aug 18: Amid speculations that he might step down and fly to a different country to spend his retired life, Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf is today scheduled to address his countrymen at 1.00 p. m.

Sources close to him said that the President could announce his resignation in today’s address to the nation.

“President Musharraf has made up his mind to resign before the impeachment motion is tabled in the assembly,” The News quoted the sources as saying.

Pakistani President Pervez MusharrafIslamabad - Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf would make a public appearance Monday afternoon on state television, a spokesman for the embattled leader said amid reports that he might announce his resignation.

"The president will address the nation at 1 pm" (0700 GMT), Rashid Qureshi said without elaborating.

Several media reports said Monday that Musharraf, a retired army general who took over in a bloodless coup almost nine years ago, had made up his mind to quit. They cited presidential advisers.

According to the Dawn, Members of the Pakistan-India Judicial committee comprising Justice (retired) Fazal Karim, Justice (retired) Mian Mohammad Ajmal, Justice 
(retired) Abdul Qadeer Chaudhry and Justice (retired) Nasir Aslam Zahid will visit jails in Amritsar, Jaipur and New Delhi from August 18 to 23.

There are over 400 Pakistani prisoners in Indian jails.

Baitullah Mehsud sets up parallel judicial system in South Waziristan

Peshawar, Aug 17 : Pakistan Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud on Saturday issued a decree, setting up a parallel judicial and dispute arbitration system in South Waziristan.

Pamphlets, carrying orders of the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan chief about the new set-up, were distributed in Tank, Jandola and other Mehsud-dominated areas, the Dawn reports.

According to the pamphlet, Mohammad Raees Mehsud will head the central committee, comprising Raees Mehsud, Maulvi Azmatullah, Maulvi Ikramullah, Maulvi Abdul Wahab and Haleem Khan. Mohammad Raees will also be in-charge of the new system.

UK has played no role in Musharraf''s impeachment''London, Aug. 17 : Britain has rejected suggestions that it is playing a key role in the impeachment process of Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf.

According to Sir Mark Lyall Grant, a senior British diplomat and former High Commissioner to Pakistan,

London is not playing any role in the impeachment moves. An official of the high commission also ruled out trying to save Musharraf from impeachment.
