Kuala Lumpur  - Malaysian customs authorities detained an Indian national attempting to smuggle in 14.84 kilograms of the drug ketamine at an airport in the northern Penang state, a news report said Saturday.

The suspect, aged in his 50s, had stuffed the drugs into three stainless steel food containers, said state customs director Matrang Suhaili.

Kuala Lumpur  - Malaysian airport police have detained an Indian national after they found 46 bags of the drug ketamine hidden inside a television set, a news report said Thursday.

The 32-year-old man was arrested Tuesday after customs officers at Kuching International Airport in Malaysia's eastern state of Sarawak discovered drugs during a routine inspection, department director Rusmani Abdul Sukur said.

Kuala Lumpur, Mar 19: A Malaysian Indian Congress leader has said there is no need to rebrand or rename Little India in Klang as it is already a well-known tourism icon.

Selangor Malaysian Indian Congress chairman G. Palanivel said on Wednesday that “the move to change its name will erase the area’s identity.”

He said the MIC is against the Klang Municipal Council’s plan to rename the area Medan Kelana, and appealed to Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah of Selangor to intervene.

Palanivel was commenting on reports that the Klang municipality would soon remove two signboards with the name ‘Little India’ and replace them with Medan Kelana.

Beijing  - China might convert more naval vessels to patrol disputed areas of the South China Sea to counter illegal fishing and "other countries' unfounded territorial claims," state media said Thursday.

China faces new "challenges and complications" in the South China Sea, the official China Daily quoted a senior fisheries official as saying, pointing to recent claims by the Philippines and Malaysia to disputed islands and a standoff with a US naval surveillance ship.

Klang (Malaysia), Mar. 18 : Despite constant opposition from elected representatives, businessmen and tourists, the Klang Municipal Council has decided to change the name of Klang's famous Little India to Medan Kelana.

The municipal council plans to remove the name Little India from two signboards here, and put up new ones declaring the place as Medan Kelana, the Star Online reports.
