Taiwan tests student returning from Mexico for H1N1 flu
Taipei - Taiwan on Sunday was testing a Taiwan student returning from studying in Mexico for possible H1N1 flu virus after she developed a mild fever.
The student, in her 20s, was sent to the Taoyuan Hospital for tests upon arriving at the Taoyuan International Airport outside Taipei.
Wearing a face-mask and sitting in a wheelchair, she was brought out of the airport terminal, put in an ambulance, and rushed to the Taoyuan Hospital.
"She has a fever of 38 degrees Celsius, sore throat and running nose," Shi Wen-yi, vice director of the Centres for Disease Control (CDC), told reporters.
The student, surnamed Ho, is one of 30 students studying Spanish in Mexico for a month-long cultural exchange programme. The other students will return home in the coming days.
Health officials were also testing 27 passengers, including 7 mainland Chinese, who flew on the same flight Thursday from Shanghai to Hong Kong with a Mexican man who was infected with the H1N1 virus.
The 27 passengers continued on to Taiwan the same day on seven different flights. The CDC was expected to release those test results Sunday afternoon.
Taiwan has not reported a case of H1N1 virus infection yet, but has been on high alert since the epidemic broke out in Mexico last week. (dpa)
