Taiwan issues travel alert for China

TaiwanTaipei - Taiwan on Monday issued a travel alert to China after the mainland reported its first case of H1N1 virus infection.

The Mainland Affair Council issued a yellow travel alert for China after a 30-year-old Chinese man who recently returned from the United States tested positive for the influenza A H1N1 virus.

"We urge people travelling to China to take precautions," council spokesman Liu Teh-shun said.

Yellow is the lowest level of travel alert, meaning there is the first case of infection in the travel destination country.

The level is raised to Orange if there is nationwide infection in the destination country, and is raised to red if the infection has gotten out of control.

Taiwan has not reported any case of H1N1 infection yet, but has been on high alert since the influenza broke out in Mexico in late April.

Some 4 million Taiwanese travel to China every year for family reunion, sightseeing and business, while an average of 3,000 mainland tourists visit Taiwan every day.(dpa)
