Swine flu hits Poland
Warsaw - Poland recorded its first case of swine flu after a 58 year-old woman returned from a trip to the United States, the daily Wyborcza reported Thursday.
The woman arrived home on May 2 with a fever, cough and headache. She has been hospitalized since Tuesday near her home in the Podkarpacie district in southeast Poland.
Tests on Wednesday showed she was infected with the influenza (A)H1N1 virus. Her condition is not critical.
Some 178 passengers and 9 crew who travelled with the woman from New York to Warsaw are also now at risk, the daily reports, and will be monitored daily by medical staff.
The woman's case comes as the World Health Organization has confirmed 1,893 cases in 23 countries.
The health agency also confirmed two deaths in the US, along with 29 deaths in Mexico.
In Europe, Spain is the hardest-hit by the virus, with 73 confirmed cases. (dpa)
