Sustainable Development Commission Warns That Carbon Emissions Remain Unmet

Sustainable Development Commission Warns That Carbon Emissions Remain Unmet A warning has been issued by the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) that carbon emissions from the govt. offices itself are not being cut adequately so that the targets can be met.

It has been further informed by the SDC, the sustainability watchdog that the emissions are not being cut at a speed that can match the targets though there has been betterment in comparison to the last year and big steps are being taken by the departments in the direction of reducing waste, water consumption and road transport emissions.

The carbon emissions levels were low by 6.3% from 2000 levels, a development of over 2.3% from the last year’s record. However, it still continues to be short of the target level of 12.5%.

The worst performing departments are the Home Office and Forestry Commission, while the best against the sustainability targets are HM Treasury and the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG).

On the whole, the govt. is on track to accomplish its targets, apart from the carbon emissions.

Rebecca Willis, vice chairwoman of the Sustainable Development Commission informed, “It’s great to see departments finally starting to prioritise their sustainability duties and make progress in many areas. However, there’s still a long way to go and it’s clear that these targets must be the start of an ever more ambitious sustainability programme.”
