Sunscreens are safe, says Local expert
The British Association of Dermatologists had recently released results of a new study that suggested sunscreen use could lead to skin cancer.
As per the study, skin cancer is caused by two types of ultraviolet light from the sun, UVA and UVB rays. The study has stated that most of the sunscreens do not protect our skin against both types of rays.
Dr. Craig Kraffert, a Redding dermatologist, has disagreed with the study. Dr. Kraffert that they're in such a situation where people have been saying that sunscreen could cause skin cancer.
A creator of a sunscreen line himself, Kraffert, said that sunscreens that are marked with 'broad spectrum' can protect people from skin cancer.
He said that ideally, sunscreens should block both UVA and UVB to be considered broad spectrum.
Dr. Kraffert mentioned that broad spectrum sunscreens should be SPF 30 or higher, with a 'water resistant' label. He suggested that this is the best product for the protection of the skin from harmful rays.
Furthermore, he stressed on the fact that anything more than SPF 75 is not regulated by the FDA and it is not necessary that it means more protection. He said that not all the sunscreens are broad spectrum, and it is crucial that one should check the label to find out the right one.
Dr. Kraffert added, "The problem is making elegant sunscreens that are broad spectrum protection and water resistant is very expensive. Coppertone is a respected and good brand".
In addition he said that skin cancer is hardest to treat on the lips, nose and eyelids. Everyone must wear sunscreen on any part of the body that is not covered by clothes. According to Dr. Kraffert, one should apply lip balm with SPF and wear a hat in the sun.
