Statin Use Expansion could prove Beneficial
As per researchers, up to 67% of all US adults aged 40 to 75 years, should be treated with statins. The researchers have said that it would be a cost-effective option that may prevent an additional 161,560 cardiovascular events like heart attack and stroke.
The researchers have assessed the cost-effectiveness of statin use using a heart-disease simulation model based on data from previous studies. Statins are available in cheap, generic form. The researchers have affirmed that it would be cost effective to increase statin eligibility even for those who score as low as 3% on the risk calculator.
The research has shown that expanded statin treatment would help provide a net benefit. The researchers have said that the updated guidelines released in 2013 by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association are better and efficient in comparison to earlier guidelines when it comes to identifying adults who are at an increased risk of having heart trouble and can benefit from statins.
It shall be noted that increased use has been assumed of causing a 5% rate of side-effects, including muscle pain. Study researchers have found more problems like the development of type-2-diabtes, significantly among those who were at high risk of diabetes.
Dr. Harlan Krumholz, a cardiologist at the Yale School of Medicine, was of the view that the decision of whether a person should be taking statin or not should be based on individual basis.
Last year, researchers from Duke University stated in a study that additional 12.8 million US adults could become eligible for statin therapy under the new guidelines.
