SpiceJet plans to buy more planes, increase capacity
Chennai-based budget carrier SpiceJet has announced it plans to expand its fleet of planes and increase its domestic as well as international capacity.
Neil Mills, chief executive of SpiceJet, said on Tuesday that the carrier was planning to increase its capacity from current 6 per cent to 15-20 per cent on global network.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of CAPA-India aviation summit, Mills said, "So the 5-6% international capacity that we have currently, we would like to see increasing to 15-20% in the next two to three years."
SpiceJet will also acquire more planes. Currently, it has a fleet of 48 planes, of which 36 are Boeing 737s and 12 are Bombardier Q400s. By the year of 2016, the carrier is expected to have fifty Boeing 737 planes and 30 Bomardier planes.
Three more Bombardier planes will be added to the fleet by December this year. One of the new Bombardier planes will reportedly be deployed on the planned Thiruanathapuram-Male route.
In addition, SpiceJet will take delivery of 6 brand new leased aircraft sometime in 2013.
Mills announced the plans in wake of a recent report by aviation think-tank CAPA (Centre for Asia Pacific Aviation) that said SpiceJet was mulling plans to buy 30-40 Boeing MAX planes.
SpiceJet, which currently operates flights to four international destinations of Colombo, Dubai, Kathmandu and Kabul, is the number four aviation company in India.
