Sensex Opens Weak; Wipro, DLF PlungeIndian stocks opened the day on a weak note following worldwide signals.

The 30-share index, BSE Sensex belled the day after losing 90.14 points at 9,316.33, as against its last closure at 9,406.47, down 180.41 points, on Friday (Jan 09).

Realty, IT and power stocks were among the major losers, while metal and consumer durables edged higher on selective buying action.

BSE Midcap and Smallcap index fell 0.33% and 0.04% respectively, as not much buying was seen in these segments.

Led by commodity producers, Asian stocks fell today on worry that growing US unemployment is deteriorating global recession.

At 09.59 a.m., the 30-share index Sensex dropped down to 9,317.22, after losing 89.25 points or 0.95%. It also touched a high of 9,317.22 and a low of 9,283.50.

Meanwhile the Nifty has tumbled to 2,839.60, down 33.40 points, after hitting a high of 2,869.20 and a low of 2,831.25.

The overall breadth of the market was sharply negative as it witnessed 239 advancements as against 369 declinations.

The top gainers in the 30-share index included Sterlite Industries (India), Jaiprakash Associates, Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, Reliance Communications, Hindalco Industries and State Bank Of India.

The losers’ list comprised Wipro, DLF, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Consultancy Services, ICICI Bank and Infosys Technologies.
