SEIU authorizes strike to protest furloughs
California's biggest state worker union, which represents 95000 employees, voted on Saturday to authorize a strike to protest against Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger's decision of forcing employees to take three furlough days per month.
The decision to take job actions, including a strike was approved by 74% of the total workers.
The Service Employees International Union said it agreed to one furlough day per month in a contract that was signed in February, but the legislature did not ratify the contract.
Jim Zamora, Union's spokesman said, "We feel that he (Schwarzenegger) really undermined any kind of a contract deal by pushing these furloughs on folks."
The union further said that three forced furlough days would result in 15% pay cut.
Schwarzenegger had instated three Friday furlough days per month to bridge $26 billion state's deficit.
Schwarzenegger's spokesman said they hope that the state workers would continue with their work at a time when California is in need.
