SC slams government for not strengthening consumer courtsA Supreme Court judge has slammed the government on Thursday for not heeding to the demands of the consumer courts for better infrastructure and more staff.

The judge noted that if the consumers might file complaints against the government for deficiency in service, which is at the core of the consumer protection legislation in the country.

Justice T. S. Thakur said, "Create a situation in which the government is forced to take action. If it does on its own, it will be graceful but if it does not, then you can count on us to intervene. We have not disowned you." He was addressing the presidents and members of the National and States Consumer forums a day before the World Consumer Rights Day.

While sharing the stage with Minister of State for Food K. V. Thomas and Special Secretary in Department of Consumer Affairs, he said that pointed out that the access to justice a basic feature and a deficiency could lead to consumer challenges. Mr. Thakur said that the government has not paid attention to the annual recommendations from bodies such as consumer courts.

Meanwhile, the World Consumer Rights Day was marked from around the world to promote the consumer rights issues on 15 March.
