Say No to Alcohol If Pregnant, Suggests Study
We often see women around us drinking and some even doing binge drinking frequently, but a recent study has suggested alcohol is very harmful if one is pregnant. The findings of the new study from the American Academy of Pediatrics contradict other studies that suggest less amount of alcohol is OK during pregnancy.
According to the report from the nation's largest group of pediatricians, all forms of alcohol including beer, wine and liquor are equally harmful for the developing fetus.
Some previously conducted studies have shown that most women stop drinking while pregnant only a small amount of expecting women admitted that they continue drinking while pregnancy.
The researchers in their report mentioned that some of mothers-to-be admitted they did binge drinking during pregnancy. Women who binge drink at the time when they are not pregnant are more likely to do binge drinking during pregnancy, the researchers noted in their report.
The findings were published online on October 19 in the journal Pediatrics.
Some of the research has been suggesting that lower levels of alcohol during pregnancy is safe, this prompted to release the report, titled, ‘Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders’, said Dr. Janet F. Williams, a professor of pediatrics at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio and one of the report's lead authors.
The pediatricians' group strongly disagrees with drinking during pregnancy. They said there are over 30 researches that clearly show that alcohol use during pregnancy causes birth defects, Williams said.
