Sad that it took a foreign director to tell this story
Slumdog Millionaire is an excellently made film. But in an industry such as ours what works and what doesn't cannot be predicted. This is the right time for a film like Slumdog to surface. This is a period when the world is dealing with terrorism and the economic downturn and the movie gives a sense of hope and positivism. Even when Gandhi was made, the world was dealing with wars. Such movies provide respite in hard times and are noticed by everyone. It is the need of the hour to showcase the despair in the world and the problems that we are facing. It is unfortunate that the film was made by a foreign director. We too have made films that deal with the common man and stories from our streets but we need to make more in this genre. Such films do get made here but they do not find the right audiences. Tickets for films shown in multiplexes are way too expensive and not many people can afford to watch them. The media should give proper coverage to such films by promoting them.
This will ensure their success. If Slumdog had been made by an Indian director it would have probably not done so well or won so many awards.
