Russia, US to resume START negotiations this month

Russia, US to resume START negotiations this month Geneva - Russian and United States delegates would meet in Geneva later this month for talks on a follow-up treaty to a soon-to-expire Cold War era nuclear stockpile reduction agreement, officials said Friday.

Officials at the US mission in Geneva, confirming a Russian announcment, said the sixth round of arms reduction negotiations would take place on September 21.

The Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty will expire in December, and both sides, describing the talks as moving positively, have been working to agree on terms for a new one.

US President Barack Obama last met his Russian counterpart Dmitry Medvedev in July, and during their talks focused on disarmament issues.

Moscow and Washington hold the overwhelming majority of the world's nuclear weapons.

The first round of talks between the negotiators, which include officials from defense and foreign ministries as well as space agencies, took place in Moscow, but since then have moved to the Swiss city. (dpa)
