Russia ban on Spanish pork angers Madrid

Russia ban on Spanish pork angers Madrid Madrid - Russia's ban on Spanish pork products over swine flu is angering Spain, media reported Tuesday.

Reports on Monday in Spain said that Moscow banned the import of pork products from Spain, the European country with the most cases of swine flu, causing Spanish producers losses which they described as eventually climbing to dozens of millions of euros.

Environment Minister Elena Espinosa and Health Minister Trinidad Jimenez described the ban as unjustified and contrary to the recommendations of the World Health Organization (WHO), which says pork meat is safe to eat.

The government said it was using diplomatic channels in an attempt to lift the ban.

Russian pork producers were making use of swine flu to take over the domestic market, Spanish producers' representatives claimed.

About five per cent of Spanish pork exports go to Russia.

Spain has confirmed 57 cases of swine flu. (dpa)
