Review of speed limits on Scottish roads in the offing
With the passing of the Scotland Act earlier this year having resulted in the delegation of powers pertaining to setting of speed limits and drink drive limits to Scotland, it is now being reported that the speed limits on Scottish roads will be reviewed.
According to Transport Scotland, which has commissioned the review of the speed limits, the appraisal will chiefly analyze the environmental advantages linked to a move to cut top speeds against the economic argument for permitting a faster flow of traffic.
As per the information shared by the agency, the review will essentially ensure the consistency of speed limits; along with ascertaining whether these limits have been understood by drivers, and also whether they are apt for the environment and road use.
The government's review of the speed limits will probably lead to a rise in speed limits on some Scottish roads; with the Transport Scotland having recommended an increase in top permissible speeds on 23 sections of road and a decrease on 44 sites throughout Scotland.
With regard to its recommendations about changes in top permissible speeds at some sites, Transport Scotland said that the increase in speed will not be "promoted" till the Police Traffic Division has assessed how well the lower limits were working; and added that it would "promote decreases on the earmarked roads straight away."
