Washington - Police arrested five members of the US Congress on Monday during a protest outside the Sudanese embassy against the conflict in Darfur. Democratic representatives Jim McGovern, John Lewis, Donna Edwards, Keith Ellison and Lynn Woolsey were taken into custody for crossing into an area cordoned off by police, Chris Shields, a spokesman for Woolsey, said.
Police warned the lawmakers several times to not cross the yellow-taped line outside the embassy , Shields said. They were charged with misdemeanor trespassing after surrendering peacefully to the police, he said.
Washington - US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton called for the development of "meaningful proposals" to combat climate change as she kicked off a two-day international conference in Washington. Warning that the pace of global warming is overrunning even "worst case" scenarios, Clinton said at the State Department Monday that the effort to reduce its effect must take place on national, regional and international levels.
Washington, Apr 27: Mayo Clinic researchers have come up with a novel diagnostic tool that not only helps detect bladder tumours but will substantially reduce the rate at which these cancers come back.
They claim that the new technique helped found more of the most common bladder tumours than the traditional white-light detection method in almost 17 percent of the patients.
It also demonstrated a 22 percent relative reduction in the recurrence rate within nine months of the procedure.
Washington, Apr 27: Prostate cancer patients who undergo therapy to increase testosterone levels are more likely to suffer from bone- and heart-related problems, says a new study.
The research team, led by Lockwood Taylor, MPH, of the University of Texas Health Science Centre, revealed that androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) used to increase testosterone levels can cause a variety of side effects including skeletal and cardiovascular complications, sexual dysfunction, periodontal disease, and mood disorders.
Washington, Apr. 27: According to alarming reports from Mexico City, Felipe Solis, a distinguished archaeologist who showed Obama around the city''s anthropology museum during his visit to Mexico earlier this month, died the next day from "flu-like symptoms".
According to The Independent, Solis met the President at a gala dinner which was held at the museum on April 16, before Obama travelled onto the Americas summit in Trinidad and Tobago.
