Troopergate still hounds Palin

Washington, Sep 29 : Demonstrators have gathered to demand that Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin to keep her earlier pledge to cooperate with the corruption probe know as “Troopergate”. 

But an investigation that once seemed of interest only to Alaskans has taken on much greater significance with her presence on the Republican presidential ticket, the CBS News reports. 

At the Alaska Legislative Building in downtown Anchorage on Friday, the hearing room was ready for seven state employees subpoenaed to testify. But no one showed up. 

The inquiry into Palin''s firing of the head of the state police began with her promising full cooperation.

Hard line clerics have said that further attacks would be "inevitable" if publication of the novel, The Jewel of Medina, goes ahead as planned next month.
 
A Telegraph report said that the attack came days after Rynja's company, Gibson Square, bought the rights to the book by the American writer Sherry Jones, which has already been likened to Sir Salman Rushdie's The Satanic Verses.

London, Sept 29: With the objective of thwarting any concerted attack form the Taliban or the Al Qaeda forces on the US ahead of the November 4 election, the Pentagon has reportedly ordered stepping up raids on suspected terrorist targets within Pakistan. The move would pressurise Al-Qaeda leaders and distract them from preparing attacks on American targets elsewhere.

“The aim is to disrupt their scope for planning and keep their leaders on the move so that it is more difficult for them to coordinate complicated plots,” The Sunday Telegraph quoted a senior US intelligence official as saying.

US Congress prepares to vote on financial bailout

Washington  - The US House of Representatives could vote later Monday on a massive deal to rescue the US economy from the brink of financial meltdown.

Legislators forged an agreement Sunday on the measure, which is intended to thaw out frozen credit lines with the government purchase of soured mortgage securities. A vote in the Senate could be held later this week.

Details of the deal emerged throughout the day Sunday.

During week-long negotiations on the 700-billion-dollar proposal, legislators reduced the initial cost to 350 billion dollars with the remainder to be authorized later.
