Czech, US officials sign another missile shield deal

Missile Shield DealPrague, London  - Czech Defence Minister Vlasta Parkanova and her US counterpart Robert Gates Friday have signed a deal on rules for stationing US troops at a planned missile defence base in the ex-communist country, the Czech Defence Ministry said.

The ministers inked the so-called Status of Forces Agreement on the sidelines of NATO's informal meeting in London. The accord complements a main diplomatic treaty signed in Prague on July 8.

Despite Moscow's fierce objections, Washington plans to place a tracking radar in a military zone south-west of Prague as well as 10 interceptor missiles in neighbouring Poland.

Brown pledges aid for Georgia amid sharp exchanges over NATO

Gordon Brown London- Britain Friday pledged its full support for the "territorial integrity" of Georgia and promised financial aid to the country amid an ongoing war of words with Russia over Georgia's future membership of NATO.

Brown made his comments after talks with Georgian Prime Minister Vladimir Gurgenidze in London, where defence ministers of the NATO alliance were also meeting.

Brown's comments followed a reaffirmation Thursday by NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer that Georgia should become a full member, despite Russian opposition.

Joint Indo-UK Army exercise ends today

New Delhi, Sep 19 : The joint exercise between Indian and British troops being held at the Land Warfare Centre in the Salisbury plains in UK ended today.

Mechanized Infantry troops of the Indian Army carried out the joint training and exercises with the UK Army from August 29 to September 19.

India and UK are key strategic partners and enjoy a close relationship on defence matters. The joint training and exercise was a golden opportunity for both armies to train together and gain from each other’s experience.

The joint training culminated in two exercises “Ex Lion strike” and “Ex Wessex Warrior”. The final day of Exercise Wessex Warrior culminated today at Land Warfare Centre in Salisbury plains in UK.

‘Phenomenon’ is the most mispronounced word in the English language!

London, Sept 19 : ‘Phenomenon’ has been named as the most mispronounced word in the English language in a new survey.

In a study of terms that are tricky to get your tongue around, the word came first, with most people mixing up the letters M and N on a regular basis.

''Anaesthetist'' came second because of quickly moving between the TH to the letters T at the end.

In third place was ''remuneration'', which is often mispronounced as ''renumeration''.

The fourth most difficult word to pronounce, according to the 3,000 people polled, was statistics, with its repeats of the letters t and s. Ethnicity, which is awkward because the n follows a -th, is at five.

''60,000'' devices left in London cabs during past six months

London, Sept 19 : In the last six months alone, London taxi passengers have left more than 60,000 hand-held devices in the back of black cabs, according to a new survey.

Brit granny charged with smuggling 1 mln pounds of cocaine in fruit cans

London, Sep 19 : An elderly grandmother tried to smuggle one million pounds of uncut cocaine into Britain inside tins of fruit.

Ambrozine Heron, 76, was caught along with daughter Paulette Chambers, 48, and alleged accomplice Edmund Anderson, 47, as they drove off a ferry at Dover Docks with 16 kilos of the class A drug.

A sniffer dog searched the vehicle and found two large shopping bags containing 20 cans of fruit, all stuffed with wraps of cocaine in its purest form.

Appearing at Canterbury Crown Court Heron, from Chigwell, in Essex, and Anderson, from Smethwick, in the West Midands, both denied smuggling drugs.
