Pakistan ‘unchained’ dozen Taliban militants to secure Chinese engineer’s release

Peshawar, Feb. 16: Pakistan has unchained several Taliban prisoners in exchange for the Chinese telecommunications engineer, Long Xiaowei.

According to sources, Pakistani authorities have swapped Xiaowe for more than a dozen Taliban prisoners in a secret deal.

"Yes, a number of militants were freed to secure the release of the Chinese engineer," The News quoted a top official, as saying.

He (official) however, declined to disclose the exact number of militants set-free in the deal.

Long Xiaowei alongwith his colleague Zhuang Guo were abducted by the Taliban from Khal town of Lower Dir district in August last year. Later Guo succeeded in escaping from militant's clutches.

Taliban warns of more attacks on ANP leaders

PeshawarPeshawar, Feb. 13 : The outlawed Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has warned that it will carry out more suicide attacks on Awami National Party (ANP) leaders similar to that which killed an ANP leader Alam Zeb Khan.

Taking responsibility for the blast, a close aide of Baitullah Mehsud, the chief of the TTP, Hakeemullah Mehsud, threatened of more attacks in the future.

"We carried out this attack and will continue such attacks on ANP leaders in future," The Daily Times quoted Mehsud, as saying.

Alam Zeb Khan succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.

ANP leader, eight others injured in powerful Peshawar blastPeshawar, Feb. 11 : Awami National Party (ANP) leader Alam Zeb Khan, along with eight other persons were injured in a bomb blast which rocked the Momin Town area here on Wednesday.

Police sources said that the bomb was planted in a motorcycle, which wentoff injuring the leader and other passerbys.

People wounded in the blast have been admitted to Lady Reading Hospital, where the condition of six persons is stated to be serious, The News reports.
