Peshawar, Sept 23 : A suspected Taliban reportedly killed at least nine security personnel in Pakistan''s Swat region after he rammed his explosives-laden car into a check-post.
The incident occurred in the Madyan town in Swat.
"Nine security personnel were killed and a couple more were slightly injured in a suicide attack on a checkpost," the Daily Times quoted the military''s media wing, as saying.
Islamabad, Sept 23: An International Monetary Fund (IMF) delegation, which was in Islamabad to hold technical consultations with the Pakistani authorities on the macro-economic stabilisation plan, has reportedly cut short its visit due to "security reasons" after Saturday's hotel blast killing 60 people.
The delegation, which was to stay in Pakistan till Wednesday, flew back to Washington on Monday due to "security reasons", reported the Daily Times.
Islamabad, Sept 23 : Denying media reports that Saturday’s hotel blast was targeted at the Americans, the US embassy in Islamabad has said that there was no evidence to prove this suggestion.
After the blast which claimed 60 lives, including four foreigners, it was widely believed that Americans was targeted by the extremists, as the only five-star hotel in Islamabad was frequented by foreigners, especially the Americans.
Lahore, Sept 23: Pakistani intelligence agencies claimed to have arrested a close aide of Al Qaeda’s number two Ayman al-Zawahiri from Gujranwala, in connection with Saturday’s Hotel Marriott suicide attack in which 60 people were killed.
The terror suspect was later shifted to Islamabad for further interrogation and investigation into the hotel attack.
Washington, Sept 23: After last Saturday’s devastating suicide attack on a five-star hotel in Islamabad killing 60 people, US intelligence officials have said that Pakistan was in a “downward security spiral”, as militants were taking advantage of a new civilian government in exploiting the growing anti-American sentiment in the country.
They said that the Pakistan government was caught in a dilemma, as their inaction was giving al Qaeda “power”, and if they react too forcefully it could generate a “backlash from the people”.
New York, Sept 23 : Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has said that only his country’s its troops were authorised to attack terrorists on its soil, and that any foreign troops crossing into its territory “violate the UN Charter”.
The statement assumes significance in the wake of the reported US troops’ incursions, both air and on the ground, into Pakistani territory to attack militants’ hideouts.
