Kenya on heightened terror alert after Somali bombings Nairobi - Kenya was on a heightened terror alert Friday after recent suicide bombings in neighbouring Somalia and the arrest Thursday in Nairobi of a man carrying what were believed to be detonators.

Five suicide bombs in the breakaway Somali regions of Somaliland and Puntland killed at least 26 people Wednesday.

Kenyan government spokesman Alfred Mutua said the fact that the bombings took place as Somali leaders were meeting with regional heads of state in Kenya at the same time had raised fears in Kenya.

Muslim cleric detained over Somalia suicide bombs

SomaliaNairobi/Mogadishu - A prominent Muslim cleric has been arrested in connection with a wave of suicide bomb attacks in Somalia, reports said Thursday.

Five car bombs ripped through the breakaway Somaliland and Puntland regions on Wednesday, killing at least 26 people.

Most of the casualties came in Somaliland's capital Hargeysa, where bombs targeted the Ethiopian embassy, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) compound, and Somaliland's presidential palace.

Calm returns to east Congo after four days of fighting

General Laurent Nkunda, leader of the National Congress for the Defence of the People (CNDP), Wednesday evening announced a unilateral ceasefire to "prevent panic in Goma." The CNDP had been engaged in fighting with Congolese and UN troops.

French charity quits Niger after malnourishment dispute

Kenya NairobiNairobi, Niamey - The French arm of the charity Doctors Without Borders (MSF) said Thursday it would withdraw from Niger after being unable to clarify exactly why its operations were suspended three months ago.

MSF has been appealing to the government to allow it to resume work treating malnourished children in the Maradi region, where its work was banned from operating in July.

However, MSF said the government, which accused the charity of exaggerating the number of malnourished children in the region, had ignored all its requests, leaving it no choice but to withdraw.

Congolese rebels call ceasefire as they approach major town

Nairobi/Kinshasa - A rebel Tutsi general has called a ceasefire after four days of fighting in which his forces routed the Congolese National Army and came on the verge of taking the major eastern town of Goma.

General Laurent Nkunda told the BBC Wednesday night that he was calling a ceasefire to prevent panic in Goma and requested government forces do the same.

The French ambassador to the United Nations, Jean-Maurice Ripert, said he hoped the ceasefire "would stand" and called on Nkunda to cease hostilities from Thursday morning.
