Two communist rebels killed in eastern Philippines Manila - Two communist rebels were killed in a clash with government troops in the eastern Philippines, a regional military spokeswoman said Thursday.

The fighting erupted late Wednesday when army troops encountered about a dozen guerrillas on the outskirts of Tabaco City in Albay province, 330 kilometres south-east of Manila, Captain Leah Santiago said.

Santiago said the soldiers recovered the bodies of the slain guerrillas and five assault rifles left behind by the fleeing rebels.

Communist rebels raid town mayor's house in Philippines Manila  - Communist rebels raided the house of a town mayor in the eastern Philippines, carting away a shotgun and 12 handheld radios, a regional police spokesman said Wednesday.

Superintendent Eliazar Bron said no one was injured when about 20 heavily armed guerrillas barged into the house of Mayor Helen de Castro of Bulan town in Sorsogon province, 390 kilometres south-east of Manila, on Tuesday.

Bron said government troops have been dispatched to pursue the rebels who fled to nearby mountains.

Philippine tourist arrivals rise 1.5 per cent in 2008 Manila  - Tourist arrivals in the Philippines rose 1.5 per cent in 2008 despite the global economic slowdown, the government said Wednesday.

Tourism Secretary Ace Durano said 3.13 million tourists visited the Philippines last year, up from 3.09 million in 2007.

"The increase in the visitor count in 2008 is greatly attributed to the strong performance of the European markets, led by Russia, which posted a growth of 34 per cent," Durano said.

ADB raises close 1.2 billion dollars in 3-year global bond issueManila  - The Asian Development Bank (ADB) said Tuesday it raised close to 1.2 billion dollars as it returned to the US dollar bond market with a 3-year global bond issue.

The Manila-based ADB said about 47 per cent of the bonds were placed in Europe, Middle East and Africa, 36 per cent in Asia and 17 per cent in the Americas.

ADB said 58 per cent of the bonds were bought by central banks, 24 per cent by funds, asset managers and insurance, and 18 per cent by banks.

Town police chief, two police officers killed in Philippines Manila  - A town police chief and two police officers were killed Monday in an attack by communist rebels in the southern Philippines, a police report said.

Two more police officers were wounded in the attack shortly past noon Monday in Bansalan town in Davao del Sur province, 945 kilometres south of Manila.

The victims were aboard a vehicle on the way to the hinterlands of Bansalan when an undetermined number of guerrillas fired at them in the village of Balagunon.
