40 missing, one dead after supermarket blaze in KenyaNairobi  - Some 40 people are missing and one person is dead two days after a blaze ripped through a supermarket in the Kenyan capital Nairobi.

The fire broke out on Wednesday and quickly engulfed the downtown branch of Nakumatt, a popular supermarket chain.

Nakumatt on Wednesday evening issue a statement saying all of its staff and customers were safe, but the claim now seems to have been premature.

The fighting came as internationally backed plans to form a unity government and elect a new president gathered pace.

The government-aligned Ahlu Sunnah Waljamaca attacked the central town of Dhusamareb in the morning, Somali news portal Mareeg. com reported.

Main insurgent group al-Shabaab took over the town on Monday only hours after the pullout of Ethiopian troops who had been propping up the central government for two years.

Baidoa was one of the last remaining strongholds of the government, which now only controls parts of the capital, Mogadishu.

Nigerian militants attack tanker, kidnap Romanian

Nigeria FlagNairobi/Abuja - Nigerian militants on Wednesday attacked a tanker carrying 4,000 tonnes of diesel and kidnapped a Romanian member of the ship's crew, reports said.

The BBC quoted private security sources as saying that the militants, who approached the MT Meredith by speedboat, blew up the ship's engine with dynamite.

The attack follows on from a similar raid on another tanker operated by Royal Dutch Shell at the weekend.

Militant raids on oil installations are common in Nigeria, where groups say they are fighting for a share of oil profits in the Niger Delta.
