NATO soldier dies of wounds in Afghanistan Kabul - A soldier serving in the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) died of wounds sustained in an explosion in southern Afghanistan, the ISAF said Wednesday.

The blast occurred after an ISAF convoy came under militant attack Tuesday in the Nahri Sarraj district of Helmand province, it said in a statement.

The ISAF did not disclose the nationality of the soldier; however, mostly British soldiers are stationed in Helmand.

Coalition forces Monday searched compounds in Gairo district for a militant leader known to conduct foreign fighter operations in the provinces Ghazni and Paktika, a military statement said.

Militants fired at the coalition troops with small arms and rocket-propelled grenades.

A press release issued from (International Security Assistance Force) ISAF headquarters said that the incident happened on Sunday at approximately 7:30 pm in Kandahar province.

Steinmeier: Security situation in Afghanistan worse

Steinmeier: Security situation in Afghanistan worseKabul - German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said Saturday that violence in Afghanistan had worsened over the past year, and promised more support from Germany for the building and reform of the Afghan police and military.

Aggression in the south of the country by Taliban insurgents has increased, Steinmeier said in a logistics school for the Afghan army, built by Germany in Kabul. The training of soldiers and police in Afghanistan must therefore be strengthened, he said.

Canada to send more troops to Afghanistan

AfghanistanKabul- Canada is to send more troops to Afghanistan in order to support fight against corruption, drug trafficking, good governance and reconstruct process, visiting Canadian Foreign Minister David Emerson said Saturday.

Speaking in a joint press conference with Afghan Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta in Kabul, the Canadian minister however did not set a timetable for the sending of troops to Afghanistan but said, "Canada was asking other partners to increase their troops commitment. Canada has had 2,500 troops here in Afghanistan and that number could expand to 2,700."
