NHRC issues notice to Tamil Nadu Government on student violence

Tamil NaduNew Delhi, Nov. 14 : The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued a notice to Tamil Nadu''s Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police, seeking reports within four weeks in the alleged incident of beating of a student by more than 20 other students wielding dangerous weapons in the presence of police officials in the Dr. Ambedkar Law College in Chennai, Tamil Nadu on the twelvth of this month.

India beat England by 158 runs in Rajkot ODIRajkot, Nov. 14 : India thrashed England by 158 runs in the first of seven one-day internationals held here on Friday.

Chasing a mammoth target of 388 runs, England were bowled out for 229 runs in 37.4 overs, losing wickets at regular intervals. Only skipper Kevin Pietersen shone with the bat, scoring a 56-ball 63 with seven fours and two sixes. It was his 20th ODI fifty.

Fast bowler Zaheer Khan wrecked the England batting line-up by taking 3/26 off seven overs. He was ably supported by Munaf Patel and R P Singh who took a wicket each.

He was delivering the keynote address on ‘India’s Civilian Nuclear Passport’ at the conference on ‘Indo-US Co-operation in Nuclear Energy: The Path Forward’, organized by the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in New Delhi today.

Trinamool leader and ex-Union Minister Ajit Panja dead

Ajit PanjaKolkata, Nov. 14 : Former Union Minister and senior Trinamool Congress leader Ajit Panja died of cancer at a private hospital in Kolkata on Friday morning. He was 72 and is survived by his son and daughter.

Hospital sources said that Panja, who was admitted on October 26, breathed his last at 4.30 a. m.

Turkey cautions Obama against withdrawal of US troops from Iraq

TurkeyNew Delhi, Nov. 14 : Turkey''''s Ambassador to India, Levent Bilman, on Friday cautioned United States President-elect Barrack Obama against a hurried withdrawal of American troops from Iraq.

Speaking on "India and Turkey: Past and Emerging Relations" at the Observer Research Foundation on the eve of the visit of the Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, to India, Ambassador Bilman said a hurried and poorly thought out withdrawals by the US would lead to a power vacuum in the region.
