Air pollution causing eye ailments to village near Kanpur

Kanpur, July 29 : Residents of Akbarpur Mati village near Kanpur are suffering from corneal diseases and other eye allergies brought on by toxic emissions from about 300 factories.

"The ashes from the factories which are running in the vicinity affect the eyesight of everyone. Some people get their checkup done and are cured but again after some days the problem reoccurs," said Raju, a villager.

The doctors have claimed that out of the 80 patients visiting the clinic, 50 percent have been victims of corneal injuries and allergic conjunctivitis.

Jammu remains paralysed even after lifting of curfew

All shops, business establishments and educational institutions remained closed and traffic was off the roads.

India, Pakistan firing on Kashmir border ends; soldier's body found

SrinagarJammu and Kashmir, Kashmir - Fierce clashes between Indian and Pakistani troops along the volatile Kashmir border stopped Tuesday and the body of an Indian soldier killed in the violence was recovered, Indian officials said.

The firing began on late Monday afternoon after 12 Pakistani soldiers crossed the Line of Control (LoC) dividing the disputed region and shot dead an Indian soldier in the Nowgam sector.

Three Maoist rebels killed in gunbattle in eastern India New Delhi - At least three Maoist rebels, including a top commander, were killed and several injured in an overnight encounter with security forces in India's eastern Jharkhand state, a news report said Tuesday.

The clash broke out late Monday when a police and paramilitary forces contingent raided a Maoist hideout in the Vishnugarh jungles in Hazaribagh district, 130 kilometres north of the state capital Ranchi, the PTI news agency reported.
