Chinese premier meets with North Korean counterpart for talks Beijing  - Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao on Wednesday met with his North Korean counterpart Kim Yong Il, as China was expressing concern over announced North Korean missile tests for April.

China said on Tuesday it was concerned over the "complicated situation" on the Korean peninsula.

Chinese leaders were expected to press his country to resume dialogue on ending its nuclear weapons programme.

World Bank lowers China growth forecast to 6.5 per cent Beijing - The World Bank on Wednesday lowered its 2009 growth forecast for China's gross domestic product
(GDP) to 6.5 per cent, citing falling exports and investment and the downgrading of the bank's global growth forecast.

As impact of the global financial crisis has spread, "China's exports have been hit badly, affecting market-based investment and sentiment, notably in the manufacturing sector," the World Bank said in a quarterly report, in which it lowered its GDP forecast from a November estimate of 7.5 per cent.

Shanghai stocks jump 3 per cent

Shanghai stocks jump 3 per centBeijing - Shares in China's main stock market index leapt by more than 3 per cent on Tuesday, taking its total gains this year to more than 20 per cent.

The key Shanghai Composite Index, which tracks shares traded in local and foreign currencies, gained 3.02 per cent on Tuesday, boosted by continuing speculation over more economic stimulus measures by the government.

The Shanghai index closed at 2,218.33, up 65.04 points, with a similar surge in the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index.

Beijing's Panchen Lama urges Tibetans to "cherish prosperity"

Panchen LamaBeijing  - China's state-appointed Tibetan Buddhist leader, the Panchen Lama, on Sunday urged Tibetans to "cherish the prosperity" and "bright future" offered by the ruling Communist Party.

"People living in Tibet should cherish their prosperity and happy lives today," the government's official Xinhua news agency quoted the Panchen Lama, 19-year-old Gyaincain Norbu, as saying.

While touring a government exhibition in Beijing to mark the "50th Anniversary of Democratic Reforms in Tibet," he promised to guide Tibetan Buddhists to "adapt to the country's socialist society."

China sends largest fisheries ship to South China Sea

China FlagBeijing - China's largest fisheries ship was expected to arrive at disputed islands in the South China Sea on Sunday to bolster the country's claims over the area, state media reported.

The Fishery Administration Ship No 311 left China's southern island of Hainan on Saturday and was scheduled to reach the Paracel islands, known in China as the Xisha, on Sunday, the Beijing News said.

The largest and fastest ship in China's fishery administration fleet was dispatched to patrol the country's exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea, the newspaper said.

Desperate Jiabao wants to ''crawl to Taiwan''

Wen JiabaoBeijing, Mar. 13 : The Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao has expressed strong desire to go to Taiwan for a visit, saying that he would willingly crawl to the island if he could not walk in his old age.

"Although I am 67 years old, if it is possible, I would like to go to Taiwan," Xinhua quoted Jiabao, as saying.

"Even if I can no longer walk, I will crawl to Taiwan," he told a press conference after the closing meeting of the national legislature''s annual session.
