Iraqis go to polls amid tight security

Baghdad, IraqBaghdad  - Iraqis cast their ballots Saturday in provincial elections in the largest elections yet in the country's history, as receding violence created conditions which were more secure than for the national elections held in 2005.

Despite tight security arrangements, violence was reported during the day. Four mortars were fired at polling stations in Tikrit, the hometown of former dictator Saddam Hussein, but no one was hurt, the news agency Voices of Iraq (VOI) reported.

According to Fox News, these translators who serve U. S. forces are worried that their lives will be in jeopardy if their names and personal information are turned over to the Iraqi government, as required by the recently-enacted Status of Forces Agreement.

Iraq's provincial elections start amid fear of fraud Baghdad  - Iraqis were going to the polls on Saturday in the biggest elections in the country's history as receding violence created conditions far more secure than the last elections in 2005.

Some 14,400 candidates were contesting 440 provincial seats, creating fierce competition among candidates that is expected to lead to greater representation of the country's sects.

Sunnis who boycotted the last elections, delivering disproportionate representation for Kurds and Shiites, are now competing for more seats.

Shoe monument in northern Iraq taken downBaghdad - A sculpture of an enormous shoe erected in honour of the Iraqi reporter who hurled his shoes at then-US president George W Bush in December, was taken down on Friday.

The huge bronze-coloured sculpture, made of fiberglass, was erected at an orphanage complex in the northern Iraqi city of Tikrit on Thursday.

The head of the Childhood organisation, which the orphanage belongs to, said that the Provincial Joint Coordination Centre told her to take the structure down immediately.

Confiscated bomb in Iraq police station explodes, killing three

Baghdad MapBaghdad - A bomb that had been confiscated by Iraqi police accidentally exploded in a police station in the city of Diwaniya, early Friday killing three and injuring 20, police and security sources said.

The bomb was one of a number of explosives seized by Iraqi police in different parts of Diwaniya, located about 160 kilometres south of Baghdad.

The device blew up while police were trying to disarm it, a security source told the Voices of Iraq (VOI) news agency.
