Iraqi shoe-thrower goes to trial on February 19Baghdad - Iraqi TV reporter Montazer al-Zaidi, who famously threw his shoes at US President George W Bush, will face the Iraqi Central Criminal Court on February
19, his brother told Deutsche Presse Agentur dpa on Monday.

Maitham al-Zaidi told dpa that his brother is in a good health and that he is ready for the trial.

"All the family will attend the trial to support Montazer. We hope it will be a fair trial."

Maitham said that the trial, which was originally due in December 31, will be open for the press.

"The deadline for the announcement of elections results will be two weeks from today," Faraj al-Haidari, the head of Iraq's Independent High Electoral Commission announced on Monday. "But we will do our best to announce them even earlier than that."

One killed, eight wounded in attacks in Mosul and Kirkuk

Iraq MapBaghdad - A suicide attack on Monday left one person killed and seven injured including two policemen, in Mosul city, security sources told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

A suicide car bomber detonated his car near an Iraqi patrol in Mosul al-Jadida area, western Mosul, the source said. Mosul, capital city of Nineveh province, lies some 400 kilometres north of Baghdad.

Meanwhile, a policeman was injured when a bomb targeted his vehicle in downtown Kirkuk city, according to a local police sources.

Iraqi pilgrim dies of gunshot wounds Baghdad  - A female pilgrim died of gunshot wounds on Sunday, a day after US forces "unintentionally" fired their weapons in southern Iraq. A second pilgrim was shot at the time.

A statement on the website of the Multi-National Forces in Iraq said the two Iraqis were shot after US soldiers "unintentionally" fired their guns on Saturday in the Iraqi province of Diwaniyah, 200 kilometres south of Baghdad.

But the statement stopped short of accepting responsibility for the civilian casualties.

Three consecutive blasts rock BaghdadBaghdad  - Three consecutive explosions rocked Baghdad on Sunday, leaving at least one person dead and at least 20 people wounded, local media reported.

Early Sunday morning, police sources told the Voices of Iraq (VOI) news agency, a bomb blast injured two civilians on a main thoroughfare in Baghdad's al-Karada district.

Later in the day, a second explosion killed an Iraqi man and wounded at least 14 other civilians in the western Baghdad district of al-Qahira, the news agency reported.

Six people killed in Iraq clashes

Iraq MapBaghdad - An exchange of fire between Iraqi police forces and unknown gunmen Saturday left five people dead, including a militia member, security sources told Deutsche Presse-Agentur dpa.

Another militia member was wounded, the source added. The shooting took place in the Mithaq area of Mosul, some 400 KM north of Baghdad.

In the north-east of Baquba city, a policeman was killed and three were wounded when a bomb exploded, a security source said.

The explosion took place in Saadiya district, 155 KM northeast of Baquba, the source told Voices of Iraq (VOI) news agency.
