Obama to Karzai: Fight against terrorism will be top priority

Kabul  - The US President-elect Barack Obama told Afghan President Hamid Karzai that the fight against terrorism in the region and bringing security to the war-torn Afghanistan would be the top priority of his government, the Afghan presidential palace said Sunday.

Obama assured President Karzai in a telephone conversation on Saturday night that the US assistance to Afghanistan would increase when he takes office in January, Karzai's office said in a statement. This the first direct contact between Karzai and Obama sincethe November 4 US election.

Afghanistan wants more NATO troops, but only for border areas

Kabul - With countries like the US and other NATO alliance indicating they will send more troops to war-torn Afghanistan, Afghan Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta said Saturday his country would accept extra foreign troops only if they were deployed to border areas and places controlled by insurgents.

Spanta Afghan Foreign Affairs Minister told a press conference on Saturday in Kabul that it was not "acceptable" for Afghanistan to see large swath of the country controlled by Taliban insurgents and other opposition groups despite the presence of some 70,000 international forces.

Touring entertainers to boost morale of US troops in Afghanistan

NATO defence ministers confident 2009 Afghan polls can proceed

Cornwallis (Nova Scotia, Canada), Nov. 22: Defence MInisters of NATO countries with troops in Afghanistan have said they're confident about elections taking place in that country next year despite a rise in violence.

According to the Globe and Mail, International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) representatives said Friday that a planned “surge” in troops from the United States, along with greater training of Afghan security forces, will help stabilize Afghanistan''s outhern provinces by spring and summer.

Attacks, bombing leave nine Afghan civilians, 14 insurgents dead Kabul  - US-led coalition forces killed one civilian and 14 insurgents in southern and western Afghanistan while two children were killed by a roadside bomb and six civilians died in an attack on a wedding party, officials said Saturday.

The children died Saturday in Khost, the capital of the south-eastern province of the same name, when a roadside bomb targeting two Afghan security vehicles detonated, provincial police chief Mohammad Yaqoub said.

Fifteen civilians were also wounded, Yaqoub said.

US drones seen flying over Pak tribal areas of Bannu, Waziristan

Lahore, Nov 22 : Suspected US drones have reportedly violated Pakistani airspace again, as they were seen flying over various areas of North and South Waziristan agencies, a private TV channel claimed.

According to the channel, the US spy planes made low flights over Razmak, Makain and Ladha areas of the two tribal agencies.

However, they returned to Afghanistan after tribesmen fired at them.

US drones also made flights over Bannu Frontier Region, creating panic among the locals, the Daily Times reported.

Meanwhile, United Nations Secretary General Ban ki-Moon has voiced his concern over the United States’ cross-border attacks on suspected Taliban targets inside Pakistani territory.
