UK Joint Defence Chief rules out quick end to Afghan conflict

Afghanistan London, Oct. 11 : Britain''s Chief of Defence Staff, Air Chief Marshal Sir Jock Stirrup, has said there is no "end point" to the ongoing international military mission in Afghanistan.

Sir Jock Stirrup''s comments come a week after Brigadier Mark Carleton-Smith, Britain''s top military commander in Afghanistan, said the public should not expect a "decisive military victory" in that country.

Afghan president reshuffles five cabinet ministries

Mohammad Hanif Atmar, former education minister, replaced Zarar Ahmad Muqbil as country's interior minister, Karzai's office said in a statement.

He said that both in Iraq and Afghanistan British troops were on a “journey that never finishes”.

“These things are more complicated In both cases it''s a journey. If you''re talking about the development of a country, it''s a journey that never finishes. There''s no end point,” he added

Mullen wants India’s inclusion in new strategy to win war on terror along Pak-Afghan border

Pakistan, AfghanistanWashington, Oct 11 : In view of the increased violence along the Pak-Afghan border and the general changing situation in Afghanistan, the US strategy on Afghanistan must broaden its scope and include India in it, said Chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff Admiral Mike Mullen.

Mullen said the Pak-Afghan boarder region had become a “safe haven for insurgents”. “Things have changed enough to warrant a review of our overall strategy there, and in fact, part of the effort is to try to ensure better coordination on both sides of that border,” The News quoted him as saying.

NATO forces to target Afghan heroin trade to curb Taliban’s growing influence

Washington, Oct 11 : In a bid to check the funding of the Taliban by heroin networks in Afghanistan, defence ministers of the 26 NATO countries have reportedly reached a compromise agreement to launch counter-narcotics operations on the Taliban network.

The deal, agreed upon on the call given by US Defence Secretary Robert M. Gates, has been described by the Pentagon as “critical to beating back a resurgent Taliban”, and allows some members of the military alliance to opt out of counter-narcotics operations.

Brit Govt’s new media plan to combat Taliban propaganda in Afghanistan

London, Oct 11 : The British government is said to be working on a new media plan to counter the Taliban propaganda in Afghanistan to reach out to the nearly six million mobile phone users and nearly five lakh Internet users.

According to a BBC report, non-governmental organisations would distribute new mobile phones to Afghans for them to make their own video diaries.

Anti-Western films made by the Taliban are already in circulation on Afghanistan''s estimated six million mobile phones, and Internet users.

The plan, said to be “having merit” according to the UK’s Foreign Office, has been devised by an outside consultant, added the report.
