Recycling of e-waste campaign rolled by Nokia India
With a noble cause in mind, Nokia India has announced its “recycling campaign” for the Indian region. Under this program, the mobile phone users would be encouraged to dump their used handsets and accessories, no matter what brand they are, at any of the 1,300 green recycling bins put up across Nokia priority dealers and Nokia care centers. The basic aim of this effort is to actually spread awareness among the users regarding the recycling of e-waste.
“As market leaders in mobile devices, we have a unique opportunity to make an impact that goes beyond our own business. As responsible leaders, we want to drive best practices in our industry,” reported Nokia India VP and managing director D. Shivakumar.
As of now, this effort has commenced in New Delhi and gradually it will spread in the rest of the country. It is quite refreshing to know that company will give gifts and also plant trees for every handset or accessory dropped.
A survey was conducted by Nokia related to the level of awareness regarding the recycling of handsets, and it was quite depressing to know that only that only 3 percent of people recycled their phone and rest 50 percent are still unaware of the recyclables of phones. Once this initiative will catch its roots, Nokia will also launch an electronic waste management initiative targeted at India as it stands lowest in the awareness.
“The used handsets contain many valuable materials which can be recovered and reused in manufacturing new products, everything can be recovered from the old mobile phones and nothing goes to useless. Nokia is making an effort to recycle e-waste to ensure a safe end treatment of used devices as well as make the society grow even greener by planting trees,” said Mr. Shivakumar.
